WEST HAVEN - Two of the foremost authorities on West Haven and Savin Rock history will further cement their
names in the city's annals when officials dedicate the Savin Rock Museum & Learning Center after them Saturday.
Long-standing residents Bennett W. Dorman and Harold W. Hartmann will receive the honor "for their dedication and
commitment toward preserving West Haven's history" at a 10 a.m. ceremony at 6 Rock St.
The public is invited.

Dorman, the city's historian, has authored and co-authored two books on West Haven and Savin Rock history.
Hartmann maintained and operated rides between 1933 and 1967 for the bygone Savin Rock Park Co. Inc., which ran
the seaside amusement park, and now serves as the museum's curator.

"I want to applaud Bennett and Harold's dedication and hard work in the preservation of more than three centuries of
West Haven history - from the Colonial era with stories of invading British troops, through the Savin Rock period with
tales of thousands of people recalling the happy days of their youth at The Rock, through the dawn of today's
downtown and shoreline renaissance," said Mayor John M. Picard, who will issue remarks at the event.

Public Works Commissioner Beth A. Sabo, who will also speak, oversees the museum, based in the lower level of the
Savin Rock Conference Center, along with the conference center.

Sabo said the city plans to hang a dedication plaque in the museum in honor of both men.

The museum, which is open intermittently year-round to the public for a small fee, chronicles West Haven's 360-year
history. It displays artifacts from the old amusement park and its dependable fire service, Engine & Hose Company 1,
as well as relics dating to Colonial times.

The museum also houses a theater and learning center with exhibits, events and notable West Haven figures, including
1933 Miss America Marian Bergeron, World War II Medal of Honor recipient William A. Soderman and American
Indian and West River Crossing settlements.
